A dab can come in many different forms and is created by several different processes, each with their own benefits, such as Butane Extraction, Steam Distillate extraction or Rosin Tech. These processes are used to separate the essential oils from your cannabis flower, most notably THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol, the principal constituent of cannabis that is known for its psychoactive traits. These concentrates or "Dabs" are able to be consumed in a variety of different ways as well, such as through a vaporizer or glass water pipe. Dabs are sometimes referred to as Honeycomb, Wax, Budder, Oil, Clear or Rosin; as they sometimes are similar to honey or wax in look and consistency when they are melted. After heating, the vapors from the dab are inhaled through a dab rig.
How is Dabbing Different Than Smoking?
Dabs are a more refined form of your traditional THC riddled cannabis plant, these dabs allow you to separate the plant matter from the oils with the psychoactive and medical rich properties. This allows your to effectively ingest your cannabinoids without also consuming plant matter.
What Are the Benefits of Dabbing?
The biggest benefit of dabbing is that it provides a potent dose of THC for effective and immediate reaction. Some concentrates can deliver as much as 90 percent THC. This can equal powerful relief for medicinal users.
Tools and Devices Needed for Dabbing
While there are a number of devices and tools that you can use for dabbing, a dab rig is probably the most important. This device is similar to a bong, but bigger is not always better in the dab world compared to the average flower bong that is known for having a large size and many chambers. These dab rigs can be small because you don't need as much filtration for the material that is being used because it is concentrated! The specific type of dab rig that you buy will depend on your personal preference. Regardless, most consist of the following things:
Glass Rig a.k.a. Bong-This is a glass water pipe used to vaporize the oil.
Nail -The nail is where the dab is vaporized on the water pipe, replacing where you would normally have a flower bowl on a bong. This nail is heated with a torch and then the extract is applied
Carb Cap - Usually a dome or top hat shaped item is used to regulate the air flow once the oil is applied to the nail.
Dab tool- A utensil that looks similar to the pic that a dentist uses to scrape your teeth. It is used to pick up a piece of the extract and place it on the hot nail.
Torch-This is a handheld butane propelled torch.
Things to Consider When Buying a Rig
No matter what type of rig you buy, consider these things when making a choice:
Function - You would like to get a rig that stylistically fits your wants and needs but ultimately it comes down to how well your rig percolate the water when the smoke is passed through it, and whether or not it splashes water in your mouth when using it. Also price plays a large factor, as hand made Artist glass can go for upwards of $50,000 and your common dab rig will cost you about 100$ - 200$.
